Working with the Community
Between November and April Jan spends time developing her own practice and making the occasional foray out into the wider world, working with communities on a variety of art projects, each one reflecting the unique character of that particular group. The chosen medium varies dramatically, with mosaic, book-making and textile collage in particular allowing the maximum participation by people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of competence. With some careful planning and preparation in advance, Jan makes sure that the end result is always something of which the community can be proud. Have a look at the three examples to the right, to prove the point!
Typically, these projects last between 3 and 10 days, with some of that time spent by Jan in her studio, preparing the ground, and some of it working with the groups, on site, actually making the work. If you have a community project in mind and are wondering about the logistics and costs, then do e-mail Jan for a detailed estimate of the likely time and costs involved. As a guide, though, £300 per day of Jan's time is likely, with that figure increasing to cover the cost of materials, travel and accommodation.
