Slate Mosaics in a Day

This is a fun and productive introduction to the magical art form of mosaic. Learn all about the materials suitable for making mosaic features for your garden and learn how to cut them too – both glass and ceramics – all through the medium of designs on to old roof slates.

The emphasis is on recycling: Jan has been teaching mosaic workshops for 20 years now and is a consummate recycler of all sorts of materials, including crockery in all its glorious forms. So, you can bring along all the little treasures that you have been saving over the years, or just dip in to the wild selection of cups, plates, tiles and glass off-cuts that Jan has built up over the years.

By the end of the day, you will leave with several little lively garden wall plaques, and the basic knowledge needed to begin your journey into mosaicing all sorts of surfaces in your own garden.

Lunches, refreshments, equipment and materials are provided and included in the price. Please be sure to wear old clothes and old shoes, since making mosaic does involve using glue and grout.  This course is aimed at beginners, so no experience of mosaic is required.

Jan's studio is in Elphin, overlooking the magnificent mountains of Suilven, Canisp, Cul Mor and Cul Beag. This remote location means that accommodation is a little more difficult to find, but the experience of visiting this area makes the search well worthwhile. Many course participants opt to stay in Ullapool, which is 20 minutes drive away. It is a most picturesque fishing village, with a good range of accommodation to suit all budgets. There are many restaurants and takeaways and shops, as well as some evening entertainment, should you have any energy left at the end of that day's workshop. And students often group together and car share for their daily trip up the road, past Stac Pollaidh, to the studio. Please look at the Accommodation links page to find out more.

To read about an innovative community partnership approach to preserving and improving this landscape for the benefit of all, have a look at Coigach and Assynt Living Landscapes. To find out about the fascinating geology of this area go to North West Highland Geopark.
