mosaic murals3Moving on from creating a small mosaic panel or plaque to creating a mural for a wall in your house is quite a daunting step.  There are so many issues to consider: preparation of the wall surface; choosing colours and design suitable to the location and scale of the project; creating internal patterns and areas of interest within the larger work and - most importantly - knowing how to plan the construction and installation so that you do not spend any more time than necessary on your knees or at the top of a set of ladders!

This three-day course is finely balanced between the practice and the theory of  mural-making.  You will be given the opportunity to estimate the quantities of materials needed, the likely cost of the project, along with estimating the time involved in making and installing the mural. In order to do this, you must either bring a scaled plan of your own project or you can work with an imaginary project that I will supply, either of which will allow you to 'test run' the process.  Then you will try two different methods of creating small, detailed sections of mosaic which you can make in the studio and take home to transfer to the wall.  Whilst making these, you will brush up and further refine your cutting skills. You will then make a test panel using the direct method, paying particular attention to creating the types of internal patterns and rhythms to be found in the work of most accomplished ancient and modern mosaic artists.

Before attending this more challenging course it is strongly recommended that you attend Mosaic for the First Time which is run at the same venue. All participants will be expected to have some prior experience in making mosaic.

All materials for the work completed on the course are provided, though you will have to purchase the bulk of materials for the full project once you get home.  Whilst much of the content of this course applies to both indoor and outdoor murals,  we will make our samples using a combination of indoor-quality ceramics and glass.

The cost of the course also includes refreshments and a cooked vegetarian lunch each day.

Please be sure to wear old clothes and old shoes.

Much of the attraction of this area of the country is the wildness it has retained as a result of the limited impact of human habitation.  Of course, this means that there are fewer choices of accommodation for the intrepid visitor, but there are still a wide number of options, many of which can be found on the Accommodation links page.
