mosaicfirsttime1On this beginners course you will learn the core skills of making mosaic and, in the process, produce a beautiful wall panel which you will take home.

Jan has been teaching mosaic workshops for nearly 20 years now and is a consummate recycler of all sorts of materials, including crockery in all its glorious forms.  This is a course for beginners, so she will demonstrate every stage of the process and you will be able to interpret you ideas in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.  You will learn a variety of cutting techniques which will alllow you to convert ceramics and glass into a unique piece of mosaic art.

We will start the first day by looking at some of Jan's mosaic work and look through some books and images, as we discuss early ideas for the design of our own mosaic projects.

Then we will go through the processes of  planning a design, choosing materials and learning how to make the shapes that will carry our design.  By the afternoon, we will be all be deep in our mosaic projects, enjoying the calm that comes with a creative atmosphere.  By the end of the day you should be in a confident rhythm of your own and may find it difficult to stop!

On the second morning, we continue with our work and you will be amazed at how a second day in a row improves your skill and your speed; some of you might even find time to do a second little project or to take an hour out to go for a walk in this spectacular part of the country.  But we will stop glueing at lunchtime, so that we have the afternoon to grout and polish our work and to discuss the list of equipment and materials that Jan will provide, so that you go home ready to carry on the craft.

Lunches, refreshments, equipment and materials are provided and included in the price. Please be sure to wear old clothes and old shoes, since making mosaic does involve using glue and grout.  This course is aimed at beginners, so no experience of mosaic is required.

If you have in mind a project for the home involving a large mosaic, then this weekend is an excellent introduction, and a good preparation for the more in-depth three-day course on Mosaic Murals held at the same venue.

Jan's studio is in Elphin, overlooking the magnificent mountains of Suilven, Canisp, Cul Mor and Cul Beag. This remote location means that accommodation is a little more difficult to find, but the experience of visiting this area makes the search well worthwhile. Many course participants opt to stay in Ullapool, which is 20 minutes drive away. It is a most picturesque fishing village, with a good range of accommodation to suit all budgets. There are many restaurants and takeaways and shops, as well as some evening entertainment, should you have any energy left at the end of that day's workshop. And students often group together and car share for their daily trip up the road, past Stac Pollaidh, to the studio. Please look at the Accommodation links page to find out more.
